Our Mission:

CANCER DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE.

The Sonia D. Peterson Foundation, Inc. is committed to enlightening the community about the significance of regular cancer screenings, emphasizing the crucial role of early detection. We relentlessly promote awareness through health fairs, community outreach initiatives, and an array of fundraising events, all aimed at making a valuable contribution to the battle against cancer

About the Founder

At just 22 years old, I began a nonprofit. I was unsure about my organization's vision, but I was determined to honor my mom's memory and restore her legacy. The Sonia D. Peterson Foundation's primary objectives are to educate the community about the importance of regular screenings for diseases, raise awareness about cancer, and emphasize the critical role of early detection. We aim to not only provide support and resources for cancer patients, but also caregivers.

Did You Know?

In 2019, there will be approximately 140,690 cancer cases diagnosed and about 103,250 cancer deaths among the oldest old in the US. Cancer in the oldest old accounts for 8% of all cases diagnosed in the US but 17% of all cancer deaths.

50K

50,000 lives were saved

The research, involving more than 50,000 breast cancer patients, found that those who took part in a breast cancer screening program had a 60 percent lower risk of dying from the disease in the 10 years after diagnosis, and a 47 percent lower risk 20 years after diagnosis.

40+

the age to start annual screenings

Major health organizations, including the American Cancer Society, the American Society of Breast Disease, the American College of Radiology, and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend annual mammograms beginning at age 40.

1K

1000 women screened, 100 recalled

The harms of screening are negligible compared to dying from breast cancer. For every 1,000 women screened, 100 are recalled. Of the 100, 81 are either called negative and rescreened in a year or have another imaging study in six months. Nineteen undergo a minimally invasive needle biopsy, and five of them are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Our Programs

community events

Our community events are dedicated to helping both men and women of all stages stay informed about cancer awareness. We believe the more people are aware of the serious of this disease, the likely we are able to save a life.

fundraisers

Our organization thrives on fundraises to help fund events, patients who are diagnosed and need help with medical bills, free cancer screenings to the community and more! We give all profits back to the community to ensure we are doing what we can to make an impact.

annual screenings

Most minorities are unaware of how to get information about annual screenings. Nor do most minorities have the income to pay for it. We partner up with other organizations to give the community access to low cost annual screenings. We also provide information and resources to local clinics who offer low cost check ups and screenings.

cancer walks

We try to keep the fun in the Sonia D Foundation with our cancer walks. This is a way for our community to come together as one and walk for those who are struggling with this battle. We want to let everyone know who and what we advocate for and why this is important. Stay in the know for our next cancer walk later in 2019!

October 2017

The Sonia D. Peterson foundation helped me stay informed with affordable cancer screenings centers. I wouldn’t have been able to find this information without them.
